With 16-years’ experience in the microfinance industry, Dave van Niekerk, is one of the founding members and current CEO of MyBucks. Dave began his micro-finance career working at one of the founding companies of the one-time South African financial giant, African bank. An entrepreneur by nature, he opted to embark on his own, founding his own micro-finance business, Blue Financial Services, in 2001.
He went on to list the company on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in South Africa in 2006, growing the business from a market Cap of R300 million to 3 billion Rand. During his tenure at the firm, where he initially served as both CEO and Chairman, he raised more than R 1,5 billion in investment from funders such as IFC and FMO (Nederlandse Financierings-Maatschappij voor Ontwikkelingslanden and OPIC) and expanded the business into 14 countries on the African continent with over 400 branches. After the 2008 financial crises a new private equity investor entered Blue Financial Services, and assumed operational control.
Dave exited the group operationally in 2009 and resigned from the board in 2010. Established in 2012 with international backing, MyBucks is Africa’s first fintech company, successfully delivering seamless financial services to consumers using technology platforms. Based in Luxembourg, MyBucks holds the three brands GetBucks, GetSure and GetBanked. MyBucks listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in June 2016, making it the first African Fintech company to list on the Exchange. The company’s current market capitalisation is EUR 160 million. Following the MyBucks partnership transaction with NGO, Opportunity International, in 2015, it has acquired the Opportunity International Banks in Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique. The MyBucks Group now has operations in twelve African and two European countries, and has served over 600 000 people since inception.
As an African micro-finance pioneer, Dave has witnessed Africa first-hand and its growth over the last 15 years, fuelling his passion for pioneering the promotion of investment in many African countries, particularly in the financial and micro-finance sector. He continues to create ground-breaking business models that make financial inclusion for people across the African continent a reality. Besides his function as CEO of MyBucks, Dave is also responsible for the Group’s business areas including technology, operations, innovations, and credit.
